What is estate administration?

Estate administration is the process of dealing with a person’s legal and tax affairs after they’ve passed away. This includes dealing with all their assets (such as property, shares, and personal possessions), paying debts, paying any Inheritance Tax and Income Tax, and transferring inheritance to the beneficiaries of the estate as efficiently as possible.

Who is responsible for administering an estate?

An Executor is the person(s) that carries out the instructions set out in a Will. If there is no Will (also known as intestacy), the role is known as an Administrator. Both roles have the same responsibility: to administer a person’s estate when they have passed away. The collective term Personal Representative(s) is also used to refer to both Executors and Administrators.
